Silicon Valley was a Navy research facility

The US Navy’s Moffett Field was located in the San Francisco Bay Area in what is now Silicon Valley. Because of the military facility’s presence, the region became a high-tech hub. Soon, shops, electronics and computer companies started to surround the Navy base. Silicon Valley now occupies a large portion of the Santa Clara Valley and has expanded up the Peninsula to San Francisco.

Silicon Valley was once called the “Valley of Heart’s Delight”

Until the mid 20th century, the Santa Clara Valley was filled with lustrous and inviting cherry blossoms in spring, and people called it the “Valley of Heart’s Delight”. Imagine the area with Japan’s Sakura atmosphere.

Don Hoefler is responsible for Silicon Valley’s name

The name Silicon Valley USA was apparently first used by journalist Don Hoefler. He used the term in his newspaper article in the Electronic News in January 1971. The article discussed how IBM computers and other electronic devices were making a huge wave in that decade. The name caught on, and put Silicon Valley on the map.
